Postcard from James W. Robb to younger brother and sister-in-law, April 1946

Creator

Robb, James William, 1912-1946

Description

Postcard written by James W. Robb to Henry and Christine Robb, postmarked April 1, 1946, shortly before he was killed in an accident on Culebra, Puerto Rico. It is very likely that this postcard was received after the April 4 telegram to his parents regarding his death. Writing to his younger brother and his sister-in-law, Robb wrote: "Hi kids — Just like a travel form[?] — Really nice down here — but I always did like the tropics — How's my boy Jimmie? Best to Mrs. Weir — Love Jimmie." Addressed to "Mr. & Mrs. Harry Robb, 135 Palmer Ave, Port Richmond, Staten Island, New York." "My boy Jimmie" referred to Harry and Christine's first child, James Robb, born 1945.

The front of the postcard shows a man walking beside a cart piled with hay or some other agricultural product, being pulled by a pair of oxen. It reads: "Typical Scene On A Country Road, Puerto Rico." Printed on the reverse: "Modern methods of transportation have supplanted the picturesque ox-carts in many sections of the Island, but the plodding oxen are still to be found on the roads outside the cities, especially during the season when the sugar-cane is being harvested." "Pub. By Matias Photo Shop, San Juan, P.R." "Tichnor Quality Views Made Only By Tichnor Brothers Inc Boston Mass."
