Description
Newspaper clipping. Staten Island Advance, Tuesday, April 9, 1946. Brief article about the accidental death of Cmdr. James W. Robb. Transcript: "Cmdr. James W. Robb. Death came suddenly, unexpectedly from the skies for "Jimmy" Robb, one of Staten Island's first heroes of the recent war. It was in the skies that he risked his life through the conflict, from the day the Japanese struck at Pearl Harbor, for he flew an unarmed amphibian plane in search of the enemy that day. Ironically, he died on the ground, victim of a bomb accidentally dropped from a plane flown by the Navy in which he served. It was Lt. James W. Robb when he went aloft Dec. 7, 1941, armed only with a rifle, but anxious to find the Japs who had attacked so treacherously. For that exploit he was awarded the coveted Navy Cross. He was a commander when he was killed the other day on Puerto Rico, while serving as an observer for practice bombing maneuvers. It was an unhappy quirk of Fate that he should go through the war and die through some mischance after peace had come." Names: Robb, James William, 1912-1946
