Description
A "Society Today" gossip column from the New York World-Telegram describing James William Robb's relationship with heiress Doris Duke Cromwell, and rumors of their possible marriage.
Transcript: "Current beau of Doris Duke Cromwell is Lieut. (j.g.) James William Robb of Staten Island. Intimates predict that Manhattan's Golden Girl, who announced about a year ago that she is 'permanently separated' from James H.R. Cromwell, will become Mrs. Robb after a divorce this spring. Constant companion of the tobacco heiress in Honolulu, where he has been stationed for the past two years, Robb is east to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Robb of West New Brighton, S.I. Jimmy's father is assitant engineer in the Staten Island Edison Corp. where he started 20 years ago as an oiler. Known as a 'glamour boy' since his Wagner College (S.I.) days, the 29-year-old U.S. naval aviation officer returns to the Coast on Friday.
"Lieut. Robb, introduced to Doris Duke by Hollywood Art director Cedric Gibbons, is seeing New York this trip with motion picture actor Errol Flynn. Nicknamed Baldy at college, where he was a football star, president of the freshman class and business manager of the Wagner College Green and White Revue, Jimmy is referred to in the book, Dive Bomber, from which the movie was taken as The German Ace, due to his early barnstorming career.
"Mrs. Cromwell, now in Honolulu, has not been east since she visited her mother in Newport this summer. Her last New York appearance socially was at Mrs. Cornellius Vanderbilt's ball June 4 at 640 Fifth Ave., for the benefit of the USO. An astute business woman with a vast estate near Somerville, N.J., as well as in Hawaii, Doris Duke inherited, before the depression, a $53,000,000 estate from her father, the late James Buchanan Duke Cromwell.
"A good piano and tennis player, Lieut. Robb was graduated from the Port Richmond High School on Staten Island. His vis-a-vis is a product of Miss Hewitt's classes. He was named naval aviator on active duty aboard the U.S.S. New Orleans four years ago, and is now a member of a Honolulu scouting squad.
"'No small talk at all,' a feminine friend said of him yesterday. 'A girl at every field from here to San Diego,' said a former classmate."
Names: Robb, James William, 1912-1946; Duke Doris (née Cromwell), 1912-1993.
